Number 16~Thank You Melissa and Jeff

I promised you (or at least hoped) for another post before the day was out and here it is. Avery was born to Melissa and Jeff at a little after 1:00 p.m. today. November 26, 2008. She weighed in at a healthy 6 lbs 11 oz, and was 19 1/2" long. Of course she is beautiful, what would you expect with such heritage. I learned a long time ago that hair always comes out darker in photos than it really is. Her hair is much blonder than it looks here, but as you can see she has a fair amount already. These photos were take when she was about 2 1/2 hours old. We're hoping to see her eyes tomorrow, and we understand she has healthy lungs.
The Day Before Thanksgiving
It is expected to get to near 50 f. I went for a bike ride, and even though I have been riding the exercise bike some, it has not been enough, I did just a little over 7 1/3 miles and I was pretty warn out. I have vowed to get on one of the bikes a lot more often. As I was traveling today I took a few photos and left is one of them. Jeanne's knee has been injured, but she is recovering pretty well thanks to being careful and a visit to the doctor on Monday, but she did get on the excercise bike for a few minutes today. November 12, 2008: A Day of Eternal Significance

Our Friend Chad Barton also joined us. Unfortunately his wife Jayne had back to school night and since she is the teacher she had to be there. You would never know from this photo that Melissa is due to have a baby in the next couple weeks.
Not Shown in the photos is Eric's little brother Clay and his wife Tiffany who also joined us at the sealing (The baby Jannica is holding is theirs) and Eric's little sister Ginger who joined us for the meal.

My Review of Proform 450 UR Upright Bike
Overall Good Value
Pros: Easy To Adjust, Smooth Operation, Stable, Easy To Use, Quiet Operation, Comfortable
Cons: Console Computer
Best Uses: General Fitness, Heart Rate Training, Weight Loss, Physical Therapy, Low Impact Exercise
Describe Yourself: Frequent Exerciser
So you know where I'm coming from I'll tell you up front I am a male in the baby boomer generation. In the summer time I enjoy riding my bike around the neighborhood at least a couple times a week. My bike is in the genre called a comfort bike, and I'm comfortable with about 10 miles per ride, though my goal is to get back up to the 16 or more that I used to do before I took a couple year hiatus. I also bought my wife a bike for neighborhood rides this year, but she has not ridden for quite a while and so has a long way to go to get up to even get to be able to do a 10 miler.
We bought the Pro-Form 450 UR so we could stay on it through the cold snowy winter months and be ready for next spring. We bought it from someone who had owned it for a while but never even broke the seal on the box. Our bike was built in December 2006, and assembled and used for the first time in November 2008.
As of this writing, we've only had it for a few days, and only put a few miles on it. I'm sure you know that one of the features of this bike is that it has games on it. For me the games are a good diversion even though they are very rudimentary. I played the “Tetris” style game and the “Destroyer” game years ago, but even then I was playing them in color, where as this display is an extremely low resolution monochrome. I don't know how the younger generation would be attracted to these games when they are used to what they have now. Maybe they'd stick to the blackjack and Texas hold-em card games. The obvious point of the games, and as I said above, it worked for me, is to keep your mind off the exercise routine. Before you get too excited about the games though, be sure you read the last paragraph of this review. Of course you could always watch TV or a movie. The machine is very quiet and I found I do not have to increase the TV volume at all to hear well.
The other features seem to be fairly comprehensive, though I have not owned another exercise bike, so I have nothing to compare it to. It uses the SMR (Silent Magnetic Resistance), which I like much better than cranking some dial to cause friction, and it seems to work very well with 16 resistance levels. By the time you get to level 16 you are climbing one heck of a hill, at least for a baby boomer. It has 10 built in programs which I have not tried, only looked at. There appears to be a good variety keeping in mind that I have no comparison. The readouts are large and easily readable for speed distance, time and heart rate. I'm having to assume they are fairly accurate, I have no way of checking.
The bike is very solid. Heavy, strong metal is used, and it gives you a feeling of stability. The seat post and glide are very substantial. The seat is large and soft, though I have thought of wearing my padded biker shorts anyway with my bony butt. It's even quite a good looking machine in case you have it where others might see it. Speaking of the seat, it can be adjusted a great distance in height and some in horizontal. My wife is about 5'8” and she has to set it almost to the bottom setting, so I wonder about a short person. Maybe by bringing the seat forward they would be okay. On the other hand, I think a person of 6' 6” or even taller could use it comfortably with the maximum height.
All in all I would say it is a good investment. However, there is one major flaw with the computer console that you should know about before you make a purchase. If you want to use an exercise program on the machine you cannot also play a game while you go through it. The instant you start a program or switch to a game or vice versa you start fresh. Even if you go from one game to another, or you've been in manual mode and you decide to play a game, you start all over. All the time info, miles, calories burned, starts from scratch. So, if you do want to keep track of any of that information you better not make any changes once you've started. Or, if you want to switch around, then just forget the calorie, or distance count and look at a clock or set a manual timer.

It Won't Be Long Now
When I married Jeanne I had a pretty good mustache. When I met her I actually had quite a handlebar mustache. As I look back at it now, I don't know how I got her to go out with me a second time, but she did. A few months after we had met I took a photo to give to her and even though I had been looking in the mirror with that mustache for some time, when I saw it in the photo it looked ridiculous to me so I cut off the handlebars and just kept it as a normal mustache. I didn't shave that off until Kathryn was about 18 months old, and when I went to get her out of her crib she wouldn't come to me at first. That was early 1980. I never grew facial hair again until around 2004, when I experimented with a goatee for about 4 weeks and then shaved it off. While Jeanne was away for a few days at BYU Education Week, I decided to try it again, and this one I've had for just over two months, though it seems longer. If you looked closely on any posts that included a photo with me in it over the past couple months you could see it but I thought I should get one good close up. I'm pulling a trick on a friend so it will be gone in a couple days, but I thought I should record it for posterity. As if posterity really cared.
What a Difference a Week Makes

Early Snow

Just in case you think I pulled out an old photo of last years snow. Look at how green the leaves are on this tree and how purple the flowers are in the bottom of the photo. It will be interesting to see what it looks like in a week or two.Tuesday, October 7, 2008

The Bicycle Chronicles

When I was young I had very little confidence in my physical strength. I was the proverbial 98 pound weakling. The only muscles I had any confidence in were my leg muscles. Consequently, I always enjoyed bike riding. I've always felt that even though I was never athletic, if I could have excelled at anything physical it would have been on a bike. Obviously, I never proved that to myself or anyone else, but that's still what I thought.
In the Army I had to run. Run, run, run. That's what we did for physical training. Some push ups, some sit ups and then run. I hated to run, although, I always got my highest scores in the PT test in running. I ran several 10K ~6.2 miles~ runs and once I even ran a half marathon ~ about 13.1 miles. After retirement I didn't do much physical stuff for quite a few years, but then I decided I really needed to, and so I started walking and then running a little. I was quickly reminded that I don't like to run. As a matter of fact, I hate it, and soon I remembered that I do like to ride bicycles. I decided to go buy me a bike and so off I went to the best bicycle store I could think of, well okay, the cheapest,
where I could at least buy a new one. Costco, here I came. I tried a few around the store and finally decided on this Blue "Motive". I rode it faithfully for an impressive two or three miles a day for almost a week. You probably think that I gave up, well you're mostly wrong. I gave up on that bike. I decided that I was enjoying it enough that I wanted a better bike, so this time I went to the bicycle store. A store where they have wheels for over $1000 dollars each. No, not the whole bike, not even the tube or the tire, but just a wheel. This was a place where serious bicycle enthusiasts and racers hang out. Fortunately for me, some amateurs hang out there and they had bikes for a lot less than the cost of some of their wheels. (To this day, I have no idea what makes a wheel worth $1000). I found a very nice bike by a company called Specialized. The red and silver one you see me with in the photo above.
Now my goal was to get Jeanne to ride with me on that bike I had bought from Costco. As I was working every day except Wednesday and Sunday and it was summer time I hired the grandkids, Makenzie and Makenna, to take their grandma on a ride at least five days a week. I paid them a dollar to ride over to our house and get their grandma and take her for at least a one mile ride. After not too many days of doing this Makenna came over on my day off and Jeanne and Makenna and I went for our ride. About half way through the ride Makenna and I were racing a little and came to a corner. As I went around the corner I cut across in front of Jeanne. Even though I was several feet in front of Jeanne and no danger to her she got nervous, hit her brakes and went down biting clear through her lip and scraping up her face a little bit. We took her to an emergency care office not too far away where they put a butterfly bandage on her lip and sent her home. If you look closely you can still see the scar. The bike is now known as the Lipper Ripper and the corner where she fell is known in the family as blood corner. I knew that I would not get Jeanne back on the bike for a while so I just let it go, but about six months or so later I tried again with no luck. She said she didn't feel like she had the coordination and quick thinking that she needed to ride the bike. I kept trying, very subtly for a while, all the while still riding regularly myself. Then a whole bunch of changes came into our life as I changed jobs, started working with Eric in the Mortgage business, etc. and the bikes went up on racks in the garage.
I often looked up at the bikes hanging from the garage roof and thought I needed to get them down and get back on them. About a year and a half ago I even bought at bicycle hanger that allows you to raise and lower the bike from the ceiling so you can keep it out of the way, but it only takes a few seconds to drop it down to go for a ride. I finally put that up less than a month ago. When I did that I also took the bike down and started riding it again. Now that I was back on it I wanted Jeanne to be back on hers too. But I ran into the some reasons as before: “It's awkward” – “It's too hard to get on and off” –“ I wish I had a 'girls' bike”.
Last week I brought my bike down to ride and the front tire was flatter than a pancake. As I started pumping it up the tube came out the side of the tire, so I let the air back out, pulled out the tube altogether and started pumping it up. I must not have been paying attention because all of the sudden I heard a loud BANG and pieces of rubber went flying. It was no longer a fixable tube. A couple days later when I was at the bike shop getting a new tube I decided to look for a “girl's” bike. I found out they had some good ones so I came home and got her and took her back up. We picked out this 7 speed Electra Townie.
So far she likes it a lot better because it's a lot more comforable to ride and she can get on and off easily. The goal of this series is to motivate me to get out on the bike regularly and get some photos as we go. Hopefully I can get Jeanne out there some also, but she doesn't want to be pressured, so I may just casually mention some times when she goes with me, or I may not, we shall see.
As of this writing, the odometer on my bike reads around 560 miles, but I probably put 50 to 100 on it before I got an instrument to tell me my speed and distance.
